Symptoms and Treatment

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”” css_params=””]

What Are the Symptoms of Prostate Cancer?

First and foremost, it must be emphasized that it is an insidiously progressing disease, so much so that symptoms related to the cancer are usually seen in the advanced stages of the disease. Therefore, for early diagnosis, having regular check-ups, especially after the age of 40, is of great importance. We can list its most common symptoms as follows:

Difficulty urinating and/or inability to urinate

Frequent urination

Continued dribbling of urine stream even after finishing urination

Difficulty during defecation

Blood in urine and/or semen

Erectile dysfunction

Pain during ejaculation

However, these symptoms can be harbinger signs not only of prostate cancer, but also of other conditions such as prostate enlargement and prostate inflammation. Prostate cancer can frequently spread to the bones. Therefore, we always recommend that our patients get regular check-ups with Prof. Dr. Halim Hattat.

What Are the Symptoms of Late-Stage Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is one of the types of cancer that is extremely difficult to detect. Because complaints arise when the stages of the disease advance. This spread, where cells confined to the prostate in the first stage multiply and jump to other tissues, is referred to as “late-stage prostate cancer.”
In advanced stages, complaints occur depending on which organ the disease has metastasized to. For example, severe back pain if it spreads to the spine, or cough, bloody sputum, and shortness of breath if it spreads to the lungs.

Which Tests Are Required for Prostate Cancer Diagnosis?

Many tests can be performed to reveal the presence of prostate cancer and subsequently determine what stage it is in (the degree of spread). However, not all of these tests may be applied to every patient.

Rectal Examination

PSA

Other Tests

Biopsy: Pieces of prostate tissue are taken with a special needle and examined in the pathology laboratory.
MRI or Tomography: Scanning the body with various imaging devices to detect whether the cancer has spread to other parts of the body (tissues and organs).
Bone Scan: A procedure performed after injection to detect bone metastases.

How Is Prostate Cancer Treated?

1) Watch and Wait = Follow-up Protocol

It is monitoring the patient and keeping them under observation without applying a specific treatment. Although untreated prostate cancer continues to grow, its growth generally occurs slowly. Even if it is not treated for a certain period, it may not cause problems until a certain stage in a person’s life. This process can be a sensible option in older men. It can be preferred especially if the cancer has a low-grade risk upon microscopic examination.

2) Active Surveillance

In active surveillance, on the other hand, we follow our patient’s PSA values, perform rectal examinations, and may repeat prostate biopsies.

3) Radical Prostatectomy (RP)

It is the surgical procedure performed for the treatment of localized prostate cancer. All prostate tissue is removed. If a tumor is present outside the prostate capsule upon pathological examination, follow-up can be conducted with the PSA test. In larger and disseminated tumors, the success rate of the surgical operation may not show as much effect as in localized ones. Complications of the operation can include bleeding, heart attack and pulmonary embolism in the early postoperative period, and subsequently urinary incontinence and loss of erection. Radical prostatectomy surgery can be performed as open, laparoscopic, or robot-assisted laparoscopic.

4) Radiotherapy (Radiation Therapy)

Side effects need to be mentioned in radiotherapy: difficulty urinating, urinating more frequently than normal, sudden urinary urgency and diarrhea, erectile dysfunction, shrinkage in bladder size, and narrowing of the urinary tract can occur.

5) Hormone Therapy

Male hormones can be effective in the multiplication and spread of prostate cancer cells. The goal of this treatment is to eliminate or suppress male hormones in the body, which can be achieved through surgical removal of the testicles (orchiectomy) or by medical means. While hormone therapy leads to hot flashes in half of the patients, it can cause loss of erection and low sexual desire in all of them.
In summary, which treatment will be used varies completely from patient to patient.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”” css_params=””] What Are the Symptoms of Prostate Cancer?
